Studying to become a registered nurse is no joke and to increase your chances of success, you must be fully prepared before embarking on nursing school. At every nursing school that you attend, there is a minimum grade point average that you MUST maintain. If you flunk out of a class, you don’t just flunk out of that class or that semester, as you would in other types of educational programs. You flunk out of the entire nursing program, and lose all that money that you paid for tuition.
Here is a list of things that you should take care of BEFORE you apply to nursing school:
#1. Brush up on your math skills. This isn’t just so that you can pass your nursing classes; it’s a matter of life and death for your future patients. You will be prescribing medication and performing complex calculations. You need to make sure that you can do so quickly and accurately.
#2. Complete all the prerequisite subjects needed to get into nursing school, or at the very least, you should be completing them by the time you hand in your application. And make sure that your grades are good, because competition to get into nursing school is fierce these days. You will most likely need college level algebra, English, nutrition, Anatomy & Physiology I and II, microbiology, psychology, and some version of human growth and development to get into an Associate’s Degree nursing program. If you already have a nursing school in mind, it’s best to check out which of these subjects are required, and then take them at your local college.
#3. If you have kids, plan ahead for any child-related emergencies. Things don’t always go smoothly and if we’re talking about childcare emergencies such as a kid falling ill, or your spouse not getting home on time to mind the kids, backup plans should be in place. Is there a daycare in the vicinity that will offer care for children who have a cold? (Some day care centers have this special service.) Hit up your friends, hit up your family, offer to trade babysitting if necessary. Remember too that you will need a child minder when you do your clinicals, which can be scheduled on night shifts or weekends.
#4. Make sure that you have reliable transportation to school – know the bus routes and times, or make sure that your car is running and insured. You can also consider carpooling with other students to save time and money.
#5. Make sure that your finances are in order. List down all the expenses that you are likely to incur while in nursing school (including home expenses), and find feasible options to cover these costs. Assume that there will be some emergencies during that time. Car repairs, home repairs…try to budget some emergency money in there.
#6. Make sure that your credit is good so that when you apply for financial aid you will get it, and get the best possible rate. Some of the best practices you can use are paying bills promptly, exercising prudence in using credit cards (or not using one at all), and monitoring your credit rating diligently.
